HAYS, John Jesse

John Jesse Hays was born August 3,1844 in Lauderdale county Alabama. He was
the son of Jesse Hays and Sara Ann Wilcockson Hays. While he was still a child
he moved with his parents to Colbert county (the part of Franklin County) Alabama
near the little town of Riverton. Riverton now lies beneath the waters of the
Tennesee river.

He entered service in the confederate army during the Civil War in August 1863 at
Pride's landing. He served as a private in the 13th Alabama calvery, co. A. He was
taken prisoner by the Union Army and was paroled at East port Mississippi 1865.

On the 20th day of October 1868 he was married to Caldonia (callie) Grady at
Riverton , Colbert County Alababma. She was the daughter of James Grady and
Martha Talley Hamilton Grady. Although her headstone on her grave in the Riverton
cemetery gives her birthdate as December 2, 1847, official records in Marshal
county Alabama where she was born lists her birthdate as February 4th 1850.

John Jesse Hays died September 6,1924 and Caldonia Grady Hays followed him
in death October 8,1925 both are buried in the Riverton Cemetery.
